Yesterday, after a series of pretty stressful meetings, I had some time to kill. I had packed my laptop and a good book so I decided to head to Blowfish to pass the time. I like Blowfish because it always has a steady stream of people going in and out but at the same time is never teeming or over-crowded. Popular with the expat and professional Naija crowd at play, it’s a nice little oasis where you know you are guaranteed a certain measure of peace and quiet. The Blowfish is actually a boutique hotel, and you can read all about it on the Tripadvisor link here but their Restaurant and Bar are open to non-staying guests as well.
Where: 17 Oju Olobun Street, off Bishop Oluwole, Victoria Island, Lagos
Good for: Lunch, Dinner, Drinks and a swim
Price range: The Mezze menu which includes the Hummus Qarma, Tabbouleh, etc costs about N2,000 per dish. The cocktails are about N1,900 – N3,000 depending on what you have. My frozen margarita came to N1,900 and the Pearl Harbour which is my usual drink there comes to about the same.
I must confess, I have never had a full meal there. I do mean to go there for a proper meal and perhaps I will one day, because they have a very comprehensive menu, and lots to choose from. But somehow I just get stuck on the hummus. I have been many times for drinks, and many more times for the Hummus Qarma, which is the special hummus served with minced meat. I cannot tell you how much I LOVE this stuff. So given that it was a bit of a stressful day, I decided I deserved to have some of the special hummus, some tabbouleh, and a frozen margarita. To my great distress, they had run out of tabbouleh (which is made from bulgur, parsley, cucumber, tomatoes, mint, garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, and salt) so I thought I would make do with the hummus and pitta bread because I wasn’t really in the mood for a real main dish, but after the first hummus went down, I surprised myself and polished off another! What a greedy little grubido I am. But it was sooo good though. By the time I left, I was a happy little bunny again. It was partly the food, and partly because I was watching the Downton Abbey Season 3 finale on my laptop. Best way to cheer yourself up.
I know there are many people who love the hummus there. I have a friend *BA* who didn’t like hummus at all, until I made her try the Blowfish one and now she is wild for it, so if you haven’t tried it, you must. And if you are a hummus enthusiast like me, let me know if you’ve had better elsewhere so I can go and check it out :).
